Surf & Turf 2: Engine Room (POSTPONED)

Engine Room is a coastal fitness race that combines open-water swimming, running and endurance machine work in a unique challenge set against the backdrop of Newquay’s coastline. Designed as a short, intense and spectator-friendly event, competitors will complete a 400m sea swim, a 4km road run and finish with either a 500m Ski Erg or 600m Row before a final sprint to the finish line on the Killacourt.

The Challenge

400m Sea Swim
Participants will complete a 400m swim in open water, navigating a course that takes swimmers out and back through the sea, creating a distinctive “M”-shaped route.

4km Run
Following the swim, competitors will run across the beach before heading through Newquay town centre and along the tram tracks towards the Killacourt.

Final Machine Sprint

The race concludes with a choice of either:

  • 500m Ski Erg
  • 600m Row

Race Day Information

  • Registration: Arrive at least 40 minutes before your allocated start time to sign in and collect your race number.
  • Transition Zone: Running shoes and a change of clothing must be left in the designated transition area at least 20 minutes before the race starts.
  • Race Start: Between 10:00am and 11:00am. Individual start times will be confirmed closer to the event date.

Before You Enter

Participants should ensure they are able to safely complete all stages of the challenge. Requirements include:

  • Confidence in open-water swimming.
  • Ability to safely complete a 400m sea swim and 4km run.
  • Arrival at registration at least 40 minutes before the allocated start time.

As this event involves open-water swimming, participants are encouraged to enter responsibly and assess their own fitness and swimming ability before taking part.

  • Bus: 11 routes serve Newquay, with connections across Cornwall. The Killacourt is a 6-minute walk from Newquay Bus Station. Plan your journey here.
  • Train: Newquay Station has hourly branch line services connecting to the mainline at Par. It’s a 10-minute walk to the Killacourt. Plan your journey here.

Yes – public toilets are available on the Killacourt (Trebarwith Crescent, TR7 1DN, ///lands.chained.passively).

  • October–March: 10am–4pm
  • April–September: 9am–6pm

Facilities include:

  • Ladies (5 cubicles, baby change)
  • Gents (4 urinals, 2 cubicles)
  • 1 accessible toilet

50p charge applies.

Yes – the Killacourt has step-free access from The Crescent, Island Crescent and Trebarwith Crescent.

A resin pathway runs through the centre of the site, suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs.

There is limited shade on the Killacourt, so we recommend bringing sun cream, a hat and plenty of water in hot weather. A free water refill station is available on site.

In poor weather, including high winds, events may be cancelled. Please check with the event organiser before travelling if you are unsure.
