Newquay Library Demonstrates the Enduring Value of Community Spaces
Newquay Library is proving that community spaces remain as important as ever, bringing people together, inspiring young readers and providing a welcoming place at the heart of the town.

At a time when so much of daily life takes place online, the library continues to offer something increasingly valuable: a shared space where people can connect, learn and take part in community life.
This summer has seen record numbers of people through the library’s doors, with 10,494 visitors in July alone. August is already on track to exceed last year’s figures, reflecting the growing role the library plays for residents and visitors alike.
The library’s impact can also be seen in the success of this year’s Cornwall Reading Challenge, with 650 children signing up so far and developing a love of reading over the school holidays. More than 100 children also attended author events with Clemo Books, meeting authors and taking home signed copies of their books.
Beyond the library itself, staff have continued to engage with the wider community. At Boardmasters, 170 people took part in surveys and competitions, helping shape the future of library services in Newquay.
While books remain at the heart of the service, Newquay Library has become so much more than a place to borrow a novel. It is a community hub where residents and visitors can access technology, attend events, discover new interests and connect with others.
